Tuesdays with Dorie: Brown Butter and Vanilla Bean Weekend Cake

January 27, 2015

I have been away for a while from Tuesdays with Dorie (TWD) and from baking. This is partly because I was away for a family trip during the year end and also partly because my weekends have been a little busy with a personal project which I am embarking on. It is going to be interesting how it takes off.

I did however manage to squeeze in making this cake – I got lured in by the fact that it is called a weekend cake and the recipe did look fairly simple. How did it / I fare?

Travel: Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

January 27, 2015

Teal. That is the way to describe the colour of the water at Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia.

Travel: Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

As one gazes down from the walkways and follows the meandering path through the park… the colour of the water is just amazing. The scientific reason is that moss and algae are reacting with the rock to create a porous rock called travertine. As the travertine coats the lakes’ floor in a white mineral “dust” it then creates a base which reflects the sunlight and the sky. All this results in some really wonderful colours!

Fountain Pens

January 19, 2015

I have not been participating in 52 Photos Project recently as I have been travelling but decided to start again with Week 37’s prompt: My Collection.

I collect fountain pens.

So far, it is a small (and not really impressive) collection as it does require some monetary outlay… So adding to the collection has been fairly slow – generally pens only get added once a year, after much deliberation on what the new pen should be.

Make 365 Somethings Challenge

January 4, 2015

Ok. So I know that it is already 4 days into 2015 but I was browsing the web and I thought why not do a creative challenge? – a Make 365 Somethings challenge.

Make 365 Somethings Challenge

I am doubtful how long I will get along with it – and the parameters that I am setting myself are rather loose.

The parameters are:

  1. Attempt my best to do this every day for the next 365 days.
  2. It can consist of anything vaguely creative – sketching, painting, origami, photography, calligraphy, knitting, baking… basically anything!
  3. Post progress up daily on my tumblr account and to do a weekly / bi-weekly roundup on this site.

Trying something new this year just to push myself a little bit more and to also use up the stock of craft products I have accumulated over the years. I am sure some days will be more successful then others but that is part of the journey.

Wish me luck!

2014 in Review: Books

January 4, 2015

I read more than the average person – which really is not saying very much in this day and age. In 2014 I read 40 books which is fairly low for me. Year after year my reading statistics have been declining – mainly owing to work and life and the ever growing backlog of tv series. There are only so many hours in a day.

I took a stand mid-year that I would not push myself to beat my previous year’s reading stat (57), and to take my time with whatever I was reading – e.g. it took me 3 months to finish ‘March of Folly’ by Barbara Tuchman (which turned out to be a very enlightening read).
